The Avenue Cakery & Bakeshoppe opened with one employee in September of 2009, purchasing the space that was previously a bakery and cafe. Within 6 months, the bakery was growing and we quickly realised that we would have to opt to change our direction slightly and limit the time consuming, highly detailed orders so that we could service more of the community. Additionally, we introduced Airdrie to our now Signature cupcake line featuring generously "stuffed" cupcakes.
Owner Debi Macleod has a long history in the bakery business and has been featured numerous times in the Calgary Herald and local magazines and papers. Debi has appeared on CityTv a handful of times demonstrating different baking and cooking techniques and even taught Kelly Hrudy how to make an apple pie. Following her passion for good food Debi taught classes at The Cookbook Co. Cooks in downtown Calgary for a few years in the evenings, sharing her recipes, love of fresh ingredients and a passion for teaching others how to cook! Debi has competed in Cake Competitions and Cake showcases and has always proven a worthy opponent. Honing her baking skills at Decadent Desserts in Calgary, Debi left her beloved position as Manager and Head Baker after 5 years to pursue other venues. After a couple of years of different positions Debi's dream was realized when the opportunity to open a small bakery practically fell into her hands. With lots of hard work, support from family and friends and a passion for beautiful, homemade from scratch baked goods The Avenue Cakery & Bakeshoppe was born.
The Avenue Cakery & Bakeshoppe does not advertise, relying instead on word of mouth recommendations, and there are many as we welcome new customers daily. We are the first choice for wedding vendors, schools, businesses and families across the Airdrie and surrounding area. Our cakes have been prepared for many local customers and featured at many community fundraising events. Our baked goods have traveled across Canada with customers wanting to share their favorites with friends and families.
